Nitrate in drinking water in Mallorca

What the Sa Pobla Case Clearly Shows

For months, the tap water in Sa Pobla was not suitable for human consumption due to elevated nitrate levels. Nevertheless, the population was not properly informed between October 2024 and May 2025. Because of this and other failures in recording the water analyses, the municipality must now pay a total of €67,284. According to the authorities, the nitrate contamination was caused by a malfunction in the municipal drinking water treatment plant. This was reported by Mallorca Magazin.

The case demonstrates that clear tap water is not automatically safe drinking water. Nitrate is invisible and cannot be reliably detected by smell or taste. Anyone who relies solely on the water’s appearance will generally not notice elevated contamination.

Why Nitrate in Drinking Water Is Problematic

Nitrate enters groundwater primarily through fertilisers, intensive agriculture and wastewater. Elevated levels can occur particularly in agricultural regions of Mallorca. Technical problems or insufficient performance by municipal treatment plants can also cause the prescribed limits to be temporarily exceeded.

The applicable limit for drinking water is 50 milligrams of nitrate per litre. This limit is intended in particular to protect infants, as nitrate, or the nitrite formed from it, can impair the transport of oxygen in the blood.

The World Health Organization also points out that conventional treatment methods such as sedimentation, basic filtration or chlorination do not effectively remove nitrate. Suitable treatment methods include ion exchange and reverse osmosis.

Boiling the water does not solve the problem either. Because the water evaporates while the nitrate remains behind, its concentration may even increase.

Independent Water Treatment Provides Additional Protection

A professional filtration system cannot prevent problems within the public water supply network. However, it can prevent contaminated water from being consumed unfiltered at the designated drinking water outlet.

How Reverse Osmosis Works

Regular maintenance, timely filter replacement and control measurements are equally important. Only this combination turns an individual device into a reliable water treatment solution.
